Wildcat District Student Nutrition Assistant

Plan and provide nutrition education to individuals and families who receive or are eligible to receive food assistance.

About this Role

The Extension Nutrition Program, within K-State Research and Extension, is currently seeking a part-time SNAP-Ed Nutrition Assistant. Nutrition assistants serve to meet the Kansas Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) mission of empowering low-income Kansans using evidence-based strategies to achieve healthy lives and reduce health disparities.

Specific strategies include direct education in various settings, community-based projects to address policy, system or environmental changes and public health approaches to help children, families and adults improve dietary quality and food resource management skills and increase physical activity.

This position reports to the Wildcat District EFNEP/SNAP-Ed extension agent.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Collaborating with district extension agents and nutrition educators to assess the nutrition and health needs of residents with limited resources.
Coordinating, preparing and delivering curriculum-based nutrition education programming to limited resource groups and individuals of various ages in settings such as housing authorities, food banks, retirement homes, and schools.
Developing partnerships and contacts with local service agencies, school districts, and other community organizations.
Serving as a local SNAP-Ed program and K-State Research and Extension representative for Wildcat District.
Participating in local community coalitions to promote, implement, and support initiatives for Policy, System and Environmental changes related to SNAP-Ed goals and objectives.
Gathering data and compiling county SNAP-Ed reports and records for submission to the state SNAP-Ed office on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

Location and travel

This position will serve K-State Research and Extension’s Wildcat District, which has offices in Altamont, Fredonia, Girard, Independence, and Pittsburg. The primary office location will be in Pittsburg, KS.

Regular travel within the district is required.

Hours and pay

This position will require approximately 18 hours per week and will be paid $15.00 per hour.

Start date

May 28, 2024. A later start date can be negotiated.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum requirements:

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance and reliable transportation.
Applicants must be students enrolled in a post-secondary education program other than Kansas State University.
- Must be enrolled in at least six credit hours during the academic year. During the summer session, students must (a) be enrolled in at least one credit hour, (b) have been enrolled in six credit hours the preceding spring semester, or (c) be pre-enrolled in at least six credit hours in the upcoming fall semester.

Preferred qualifications:

Pursuing a degree in nutrition, family and consumer sciences, public health, education, or a closely related field.
Knowledge, experience, or interest in working with limited resource families, diverse audiences and subject matter including food safety.
Exemplary written and verbal communication skills, confident speaking in front of groups and facilitating meetings.
Knowledge, experience, or interest in public health approaches to promote policy, system and environmental changes and improve access to healthy food and physical activity opportunities.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with both English and Spanish-speaking learners.
