The female mosquito feeds on blood of an infected bird. Horses and people are infected by a bite from an infected mosquito. Less than 1 percent of people infected develop severe illness. Most mosquito bites do not lead to WNV infection. WNV cannot be transmitted from person-to-person or animal-to-person. 8 p.
