Video: Kids learn more about agriculture at Farm-to-Plate camp

In this video, K-State local food fellow Kiley Whipple and Fort Hays State University agriculture professor Sophie Ano explain the goals of the Farm-to-Plate camp held recently in Hays.

“Farm-to-Plate camp is an opportunity for kids to physically be on a farm, which is an opportunity that not a lot of kids get,” Whipple said. “We are teaching kids where their food comes from, and that the formation of their food starts at agriculture.”

“This camp is about being able to give them that experience of where their food comes from and how it gets to the plate at their house.”

She adds: “My favorite part of camp has definitely been the kids’ feedback; getting to hear what they know and then sharing new ideas with them. You see their eyes light up when you tell them where something comes from, like the fact that their shirt comes from cotton or wool from an animal. That idea was just wild to them.”
