Forming an Extension District

Kansas Extension District Law, passed in 1991, gives local Extension Councils and county commissions the opportunity to partner with one or more counties to form an Extension District. The extension district is a taxing subdivision of the State of Kansas and has the power to contract and to acquire, hold, and convey real and personal property. Forming a district creates an opportunity to structure an extension unit capable of providing more efficient, relevant, effective, and sustainable programs for local citizens.

The formation of an extension district requires a significant amount of planning and preparation. These resources were designed to help local units throughout the districting process.
